"Astana" Basketball Club was established in March 2011 with support from the National Welfare Fund "Samruk-Kazyna".

"Astana" BC has already engaged leading Kazakhstani players: Rustam Yargaliev, Anton Ponomarev, Vsevolod Fadeykin, Yegor Biryulin, Maxim Voyeikov, Dmitry Klimov and Pavel Ilyin as well as legionnaires whose names are well known in Europe: Jerry Johnson, Rawle Marshall, Eric Williams, Branko Cvetkovic and Luke Drcha. Italian specialist Matteo Bonicioli was invited to be a coach of the club; in 2008 he was the Coach of the Year in Italy. In the same year, he won EuroChallenge with Avellino Club; in 2010 Lottomatika Roma under his leadership entered top 16 of the Euroleague, and now he is taking our team to the victory.

In VTB League, "Astana" Club held 16 games, of which it won 7 games: it won games with such giants of European basketball as Lithuanian "Zalgiris", Ukrainian "Budyvelnik", Estonian "Kalev", Russian "Nizhny Novgorod" and "Khimki", the reigning champion of the League and European Cup.

Players of "Astana" Basketball Team repeatedly became best in their leagues.

  • Rawle Marshall – best player of November 2011 in VTB League as well as Best Small Forward of Kazakhstan’s Cup 2012.
  • Jerri Johnson - "Best point guard" of the National Cup 2012 and Kazakhstan’s Championship 2011/20112.
  • Rustam Yargaliyev - "Best shooting guard" of the Kazakhstan’s Cup - 2012.
  • Branko Cvetković - "Best small forward" of the Kazakhstan’s Cup - 2011.
  • Erik Williams - "Best central player" of the National Cup 2011 and Kazakhstan’s Championship 2011/2012.
