Cycling tracker Sergei Ponomarev: "We eat 15 thousand calories per day and press 440 kilograms with our feet"

27.10.2020

Valikhan ten, the host of the "Other You" column, is a rising star of the Kazakhstan Cycling track, twice winner of the Asian games, Asian champion, winner of the 6th place in the world championship (keirin), master of sports of international class in Cycling Sergey Ponomarev.

- Good afternoon, Sergey! Kazakhstan Cycling pleases with its success in road Cycling. Recently, track cyclists have also started to please. But we don't know much about the bike track itself. Let's fill in the gap. What is a bike track? What competitions are there? There are even different features of the bike structure?

- Bike track is very different from Cycling on the track, there is a completely different bike. There is only one gear, and there are no brakes, so you can't turn back, you keep turning forward. On the track there is a sprint race, sprint and keirin. And there are group types – only four types of races. The Olympic games include team sprint, sprint and keirin.

- Do you train on a bike track in Nur-Sultan?

- Yes, and many friends in Europe and Russia are jealous of us, because we have a bike track, and there is a gym in it, and we can train around the clock whenever we want. Moreover, the bike track is covered – even the worst weather does not interfere.

- You won three licenses for the upcoming Olympics. What categories are these licenses in?

- This is sprint, Omnium and keirin.

- What is a sprint?

- First comes the qualification - 200 meters on the move. Run, give three laps: two laps you" under the Board " go, and the last lap you finish-200 meters at maximum. "Underboard" is when you are launched alone, and when the finish circle begins, you go down, and 200 meters are timed. Thus, 28 people are selected for the direct sprint race. 6 people go to the keirin, and you don't know what position you will be in – all at random. Athletes line up in a row, a motorcycle rides in front and three laps accelerate the group to 55 kilometers per hour. Then the bike goes off the course – and the race itself begins.

- Keirin is the most gambling race, where collisions are frequent, burns get, crazy falls?

"Yes, that's right. Danger, action, speeds over 70 kilometers per hour, pushing, falling, fighting for position.

- What kind of track competitions is our Kazakhstan team strong in?

- Hard to say. We have fifty-fifty here. Tempo sports have also won a license for the Olympics, they can prepare and perform well, reach the top places. And today we have a great growth in terms of development, we definitely plan to win a medal. As Valentin Savitsky became the head coach in 2017, everything changed for the better. Thank him.

- Let's talk about the" physics " of sprinters on the track. Here are road cyclists – they are all so slim, so dry. You're all pumped up, all muscle...

- Yes, we are from different weight categories. Road users try to be thin and dry, so that there is no excess weight. But in our sprint , it's the opposite: if you have muscle mass, it's good, you can show explosive strength. Although there are riders who don't have big muscles, for example, Malaysian rider Azizulhasni Awang, he is the 2017 world keirin champion, slightly taller than me, not much bigger than me, so he can do a lot.

- But this is probably an exception? Do athletes with strong muscles still win?

- Yes, it is (win with strong brains-coach's note< / em>).

- What physical exercises do you do that you had big, developed muscles?

- At the OFP in the gym, we focus on the leg press.

- How much do you press?

- Not too much – 440 kilograms. There are some that press more ...

- How many calories a day do you need to maintain this kind of muscle mass? Swimmers have a calorage of 9,000 calories a day, and roadies have about 10,000 calories, but you?

- From 10 to 15 thousand calories a day (laughs). I do not know, to be honest, how much! At the same time, the Sprinter's diet is quite high in protein. Our entire food system was made up by Valentin Savitsky, we consume a lot of protein products, complex carbohydrates and vegetables, and the coach always keeps olive and linseed oil on the table, but we often forget about it.

- There are very dangerous bikes In the bike track, they don't have brakes. Is it dangerous to drive?

- Anything can happen. If you're going fast – you'll be thrown from the saddle, you can fly out. Track bike is not for cowards, you need to become one with it.

- You develop speed in direct gear, but how do you slow down? Or will you just keep going around in circles until the speed drops by itself?

"Well, Yes. When you've done your job, gone the distance, and you have a high speed-about 75 kilometers per hour, you just relax your legs and press a little bit back.

- Are there Falls or burns?

- Are. If you fall on the track at speed, you will have a burn on the entire side on which you fell. The most unpleasant thing is when you fall on a wooden canvas: you get big splinters.

- Do you think the popularity of the bike track will grow in Kazakhstan? It's scary to pedal without brakes, and these splinters ...

- I think that this will not affect the popularity – in every sport there are injury-prone situations. Take me: I started Cycling at 11, did it for two years, then quit before the competition because I was afraid of falling. A month later, he returned again and entered the track Department at the boarding school. I went to Astana for the first time for a track race – I was scared. And on the last day of the race, there was a "blockage" ahead of me, so I got into this pile too. And that's it, after this fall, my fear disappeared.

- Do you think Amateur girls will love a bike track as much as a road track?

- Of course. I know many fans-girls who are engaged, play for the national team of Kazakhstan. Girls are the adornment of Cycling, my chosen one is from Cycling.

- I asked because road Cycling is slim, and girls want to be slim in a beautiful bike uniform, and you have only jocks there, right?

- We also have all sorts of things. Fast athletes – they are like road racers, slender. But in the sprint-Yes, there is power, but they have well-built muscles and wonderful round buttocks, the sprint is the best place to pump up the "nut".

- Which girls do you like best?

- Me? Medium build.

- Aren't you offended that all the stars of Kazakhstan Cycling are road athletes?

- It's a bit of a shame that we are not so well known… But we only had three years, and this year we were able to prove that the sprint exists in Kazakhstan, and no one can do anything about it! It's a pity that the Olympics were postponed, but now there is more time to prepare.

- Which regions are strong track users?

- Karaganda and Kokshetau, although they do not have the bike track itself.

- So you can become a track rider after a road bike?

"Of course you can. Five years I've only been on the track before I was on the highway, as it was not possible to perform in the sprint, he was not encouraged, well, now everything changes, the new leadership of the Federation is very supportive of us.

- How Much does a track bike cost?

- About 11 thousand euros, complete set. There are also custom-made ones-they are even more expensive.

- Thank you, Sergey, for telling us about the bike track! And now, please give a parting word to the people of Kazakhstan, so that everyone wants to become like you!

- I strongly advise all parents to give their children to Cycling. This sport inspires and calls for new victories. We need more strong athletes to compete with. Send your children to Cycling!
