20.12.2017

On the road, UNICS won a victory in overtime over Kazakhstan's Astana - 78:73 (22:19, 16: 6, 19:20, 9:21, 12: 7).

Already in the second quarter, Kazan made a weighty bid for the final victory: their defense blocked “Astana” all the approaches to the ring, and the hosts managed to score only 6 points. However, after a long break, “Astana” noticeably changed. Leonidas Caselakis and Justin Carter brought a dash to Kazakhstan - 17 out of 20 points scored by Astana in the third 10-minute lead. In the final game segment, the hosts continued to reduce the gap - two minutes before the end of the game after the distant hit by Anton Ponomarev, they were only one point behind - 62:63.

In the decisive minutes of the game, Anton Ponkrashov took the initiative, having implemented a three-pointer. But Anthony Clemmons prepared a decent answer - another long-distance shot, and the difference is again 1 point 30 seconds before the end of the meeting. In the last attack, restless Carter could bring a sensational victory to Astana, but realized only one free kick - overtime!

In the extra five-minute, UNICS continued to bet on long shots - first Ponkrashov got out of the arc from the arc, and then Joaquin Colom was accurate - this hit for the Spaniard was the first in the whole match! He also put the winning point - two realized penalties and "-5". This difference has become critical - the owners did not have time to play it.

The most productive:

Astana: Larry Gordon (18), Leonidas Caselakis (18), Justin Carter (13 + 8 rebounds + 8 assists + 4 steals), Anthony Clemmons (10 + 7 rebounds)

UNICS: Jamar Smith (20), Anton Ponkrashov (14 + 7 assists), Stefan Lasme (14 + 11 rebounds)

Astana head coach Kostas Flevarakis:
- I have a feeling that this season we were missing two victories - I’m talking about matches with Khimki and today's game with UNICS. Very offensive defeat. Everything was in our hands, but, unfortunately, we could not win. We acted well in the second half and deserved the victory. I am glad that despite the problems - we have an acute shortage of point guard - my team is ready to fight to the last, we are ready to fight against big teams. Of course, there is a positive dynamic, we will continue to work on the bugs and will prepare further.

Astana head coach Dimitris Priftiz:
- This was a very interesting game, we had an advantage in the first half, we had a good ball possession, almost all opening shots fell and were quite effective. In the second half, Astana switched to zone defense, which gave us certain problems. Be that as it may, the game reached overtime, where three-pointers helped us. I want to congratulate "Astana" and the coach Kostas Flevarakis with a good game.

The next match, Astana, will take place on the road, on December 25, the capital's basketball players will meet with CSKA Moscow within the VTB United League.
