What is Taekwondo?

We continue our acquaintance with sports

Taekwondo (taekwondo) is a Korean martial art with more than 2 thousand years of development history. The word taekwondo in translation consists of three roots: leg (tae), hand (kwon) and path (do). It has two components: the first is "taekwon", the use of arms and legs for self-defense, and the second is "Do" life path, including the formation of a personality with moral and ethical education and intensive mental training for the development of higher consciousness by comprehending the culture and philosophy of Taekwon-Do ...

For the world development of Taekwon-Do (taekwondo), the founder of this sport, General Choi Hong Hee, convened a founding conference on March 22, 1966, where it was decided to name the new legal entity the International Taekwon-Do Federation. He was included in the program of the Olympic Games at the Games in Sydney in 2000.

Despite the fact that taekwondo, in comparison with many other sports, is a fairly young martial art, has gained immense popularity throughout the world, and today the number of people involved in it is about 40 million people.

The taekwondo program includes 4 disciplines - these are competitions in:

  • sparring (masogi), by
  • formal complexes (tul),
  • breaking boards (virek-3 different blows for women and 5 different blows for men),
  • special technique Taekwon-Do (t-ki - breaking boards with a long and high jump - 3 different jumps for women and 5 different jumps for men).
In addition to competitive disciplines, the training program also includes self-defense techniques (khosinsul).

In Taekwon-Do there is a unique system for issuing belts: 10 categories of "gyps" of colored belts and 9 degrees (dans) of black ones.

Taekwondo fighters compete in three rounds of three minutes with a break of one minute, for children under 14 years old - three rounds of two minutes with a break of thirty seconds (it is possible to reduce to 2 rounds). Athletes who have been trained in sparring technique for at least three months, who are divided by age, weight category, and also by gender, can participate in single combat.

This sport was officially registered in our country in 1991 and in that year in Kazakhstan, which began its independent path of independence, the Taekwondo Federation (WTF) appeared.

His own Olympic medalist - Arman Chilmanov (in the category over 80 kilograms) appeared in 2008, he won the fight against the Cuban Angel Matos and brought the bronze Olympic medal. Today, the country's athletes at the world championships, Asia and other international competitions adequately represent their homeland, winning high awards.

In all regions of Kazakhstan, this sport is widespread, and the number of people involved in this popular sport reaches more than 12 thousand people.

In turn, children's taekwondo is undoubtedly useful for the development and growth of children in this sport, for boys it is the development of endurance and coordination, for girls it is flexibility and plasticity. The most important thing for all children is the ability to protect themselves.
