In the capital of Germany, Berlin, the world championship in track cycling among the elite was held from February 26 to March 1 of this year. The national team of Kazakhstan included 8 riders, half of them, that is, 3 athletes, from the Center for Olympic Training in Cycling. These are: Maxim Naletov, Andrey Chugay and Sergey Ponomarev.

The Kazakhstan track team's calendar for the last two years has been entirely focused on obtaining a license for the 2020 Olympic Games. Kazakhstani athletes at the World Cups achieved successful results and earned a sufficient number of points to participate in the World Cup. Which countries will become the owners of the trips to Tokyo will be determined by the results of the World Cups.

According to preliminary estimates, Kazakhstan can apply for three quotas - for omnium, individual sprint and keirin, and the Cycling Federation of the country relies on this indicator thanks to the successful performances of Artem Zakharov in omnium (10th place) and Sergey Ponomarev in keirin (6th place). The final results are expected to be officially announced by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on March 9 this year.

At the World Championships, Maxim Naletov, Sergey Ponomarev and Andrey Chugai took 13th place in the team sprint, Andrey Chugai finished 18th in the round, Sergey Ponomarev 22nd, in the group race on points Roman Vasilenkov 21st, Alisher Zhumakan in scratch 21st and 17th in the individual pursuit, and Rinata Sultanova in the omnium took 20th place in the general classification and became 18th in the scratch.

KFVS President Nurlan Smagulov held a meeting with UCI President David Lappartien within the framework of the world championship, during which they discussed the issues of holding international competitions in track cycling and BMX.
